Vehicle Compatibility Notes

The vehicle models listed above represent platforms on which this rooftop tent is commonly used by customers.

It is important to ensure that both your vehicle roof and roof rack dynamic load ratings are sufficient to support the tent.

Tent Specifications

  • Open dimensions (L × W × H): 59.75" × 79" × 46"
  • Closed dimensions (L × W × H): 59.75" × 49.75" × 14"
  • Mattress dimensions (L × W × H): 53" × 78" × 2.36"
  • Tent weight: 141 lbs
  • Weight capacity (static): 800 lbs

Rear Hatch & Tailgate Clearance

Rear hatch or tailgate clearance depends on the relationship between the vehicle’s usable roof length and the tent’s closed length.

If the tent closely matches or exceeds the usable roof length, rear hatch or tailgate clearance may be limited, and full opening may not be possible.

Common solutions include:

Depending on the vehicle and mounting position, the following solutions may help improve clearance:

  • Repositioning the tent forward on the roof rack
  • Using a full-length platform rack
  • Adding rack risers or spacers
  • Upgrading rear hatch lift struts
  • Using a bed-mounted or external support system (exoskeleton rack), where applicable

Load Capacity & Support Systems

If your vehicle roof or roof rack does not meet the required dynamic load capacity, an external support system (such as an exoskeleton rack) may be required to safely carry the tent.

Important Disclaimer

Always verify specifications with your vehicle and roof rack manufacturer prior to installation.

Overview

The Tuff Stuff Alpha II is a hard-shell, side-opening rooftop tent designed for campers who want quick setup, a compact footprint, and dependable four-season performance.

One of Tuff Stuff’s most popular rooftop tents, the Alpha II sets up in under two minutes, making it ideal for overnight stops, weekend trips, and frequent travel. Its sloped ABS shell helps reduce wind resistance, while the higher closed profile allows bedding to remain inside when packed.

With durable materials, a comfortable mattress, and multiple ventilation points, the Alpha II delivers a balanced mix of comfort, speed, and reliability.

Why Campers Choose the Alpha II

  • Fast Side-Opening Design
Opens to the passenger side only, creating a wide sleeping area with quick, simple deployment.
  • Aerodynamic Hard Shell
ABS shell minimizes wind resistance while protecting the tent during travel.
  • Bedding Stays Inside
Taller closed height allows sleeping bags and light bedding to remain inside when closed.
  • Four-Season Construction
Weather-resistant fabrics, rainfly, and rigid shell handle changing conditions year-round.

Installation Notes

  • Your vehicle must have left-to-right crossbars rated to support at least 190 lbs of dynamic load.
  • Crossbars should be spaced a minimum of 30 inches apart to ensure proper weight distribution and safe mounting.
  • Pickup trucks: We strongly recommend using a truck bed rack. Alpha rooftop tents should not be mounted directly on the cab roof.
  • Rooftop tents are not vehicle-specific. Always confirm your roof rack or rail system is rated to support both the tent weight and the occupants inside (static load).
  • Verify crossbar dimensions before installation. Maximum supported crossbar width: 3.25″. Wider bars will require custom brackets or adapters.

Mounting the Tent

  1. Installation requires at least two people to safely lift and position the tent.
  2. The tent is designed to open on the passenger side only. Position it on your roof rack, bed rack, or trailer and center it for balance.
  3. Using the supplied hardware and mounting plates, slide the bolts into the underside mounting channels. Use two bolts per corner—one in front of and one behind each crossbar.
  4. Insert the bolts through the bracket holes and thread the nuts onto each bolt.
  5. Adjust the tent’s alignment and appearance. Once positioned, tighten all nuts firmly until the tent is fully secure.
  6. Release the side buckles, lift the handle to engage the hydraulic arms, and open the hard shell.
  7. Fully extend the telescoping ladder, then pull down to unfold the tent.
  8. Adjust the ladder height and angle for maximum stability.
  9. Insert the tension rods into the window and overhang sleeves to support the awnings.
  10. Open the door, secure the ladder, and enjoy your rooftop setup.

Required Maintenance

Clear Coat Protection
The Alpha shell features a UV-protected clear coat over the ABS surface to protect against sunlight, salt, and debris. Over time, this layer may wear or chip. Regular cleaning and waxing will extend its lifespan.

Tips for Clear Coat Care:

  • Avoid prolonged direct sunlight.
Park in shaded or covered areas whenever possible to reduce UV exposure.
  • Remove bird droppings and bug residue promptly.
These substances are acidic and can damage the finish if left untreated. Rinse gently with clean water.
  • Wash off salt buildup regularly.
Especially important in coastal or winter environments to prevent corrosion and dulling.
  • Avoid tree sap.
Sap can stain or soften the coating. Clean carefully using mild soap and water.
  • Hand wash and wax periodically.
Use a microfiber cloth and non-abrasive automotive wax to maintain gloss and protection.

Shell Repair – When Damage Occurs

Repair Process:

  1. Clean the damaged area using mild soap, water, and a plastic-safe cleaner.
  2. Sand or grind the affected area to remove loose edges or debris.
  3. Apply a rigid ABS-compatible plastic repair compound to fill cracks or chips.
  4. Allow the repair to cure fully, then prime and paint as desired.

Alignment & Surface Correction:

  • If the shell becomes warped, gently heat the area with a heat gun until pliable, then reshape using a roller or blunt tool.
  • Cool the area using a damp cloth once proper shape is restored.
  • Sand smooth with fine (≈80-grit) sandpaper before refinishing.
  • For edge tears, align the exterior using aluminum body tape before repairing from the inside to reduce filler use and restore shape.

Recommended Products

  • Use ABS-safe plastic repair kits or epoxy-based fillers for long-term durability.
  • Avoid welding unless performed by a professional experienced with ABS or composite materials.
