Vehicle Compatibility Notes

The vehicle models listed above represent platforms on which this rooftop tent is commonly used by customers.

It is important to ensure that both your vehicle roof and roof rack dynamic load ratings are sufficient to support the tent.

Tent Specifications

  • Open dimensions (L × W × H): 75" × 87" × 52"
  • Closed dimensions (L × W × H): 75" × 55" × 15"
  • Tent weight: 176 lbs
  • Weight capacity: 1,100 lbs

Rear Hatch & Tailgate Clearance

Rear hatch or tailgate clearance depends on the relationship between the vehicle’s usable roof length and the tent’s closed length.

If the tent closely matches or exceeds the usable roof length, rear hatch or tailgate clearance may be limited, and full opening may not be possible.

Common solutions include:

Depending on the vehicle and mounting position, the following solutions may help improve clearance:

  • Repositioning the tent forward on the roof rack
  • Using a full-length platform rack
  • Adding rack risers or spacers
  • Upgrading rear hatch lift struts
  • Using a bed-mounted or external support system (exoskeleton rack), where applicable

Load Capacity & Support Systems

If your vehicle roof or roof rack does not meet the required dynamic load capacity, an external support system (such as an exoskeleton rack) may be required to safely carry the tent.

Important Disclaimer

Always verify specifications with your vehicle and roof rack manufacturer prior to installation.

Overview

The Tuff Stuff Alpha Hard Shell Rooftop Tent is a hybrid side-opening rooftop tent designed for overlanders who want quick setup, low wind resistance, and everyday camping comfort.

This tent can be set up in under two minutes, making it ideal for frequent stops and efficient camp transitions. Its sloped aerodynamic shell helps reduce wind resistance while driving, and the higher closed profile allows bedding to remain inside when packed—saving time and effort at camp.

Built with durable materials, a comfortable mattress, and multiple ventilation points, the Alpha balances speed, comfort, and practicality for four-season use.

Why Campers Choose the Alpha

  • Fast Side-Opening Design
Opens to the side for quick, efficient deployment and a wide sleeping area.
  • Aerodynamic Hard Shell
Sloped shell design helps minimize wind resistance during travel.
  • Bedding Stays Inside

  • Comfort-Focused Interior
Thick mattress, multiple screened windows, skylight, and built-in lighting included.

Installation Guide

Installing your Alpha Hard Shell Rooftop Tent requires two people for safe lifting and positioning.

Positioning:
Place the tent on your roof rack, bed rack, or trailer and center it to your preferred alignment.
Note: The Alpha tent opens on the passenger side only.

Securing the Tent:
Use the provided mounting hardware and plates. Slide the bolts into the base channel — two bolts per corner (one in front and one behind each crossbar). Run the bolts through the mounting brackets and thread the nuts onto the bolts.

Final Alignment:
Confirm the tent is straight, balanced, and properly positioned. Once satisfied, tighten all nuts evenly until the tent is fully secured and cannot shift.

Opening the Tent:
Release the side buckles and push up on the handle to engage the hydraulic lift arms. The hard shell will open smoothly.

Ladder Setup:
Extend the telescoping ladder fully. Pull it downward until the folding side of the tent opens and locks into position, then adjust the ladder to the desired height for safe entry.

Maintenance

Your Alpha’s ABS shell is coated with a clear protective layer designed to guard against UV rays, road debris, and environmental wear.

Protecting the Clear Coat:
Limit prolonged sun exposure when possible. Remove bird droppings quickly, rinse salt buildup in coastal or snowy regions, avoid tree sap, and wash and wax the shell regularly using mild soap and a microfiber cloth.

Shell Repair – When Damage Occurs

In the event of minor cracks or surface damage, the ABS shell can be restored using a rigid plastic repair compound.

Repair Process:
Clean the damaged area thoroughly, prep and fill with repair compound, then prime and paint once cured. Reinforce from behind with epoxy if additional strength is required.

Surface Alignment:
If the plastic becomes distorted, gently heat the area with a heat gun, reshape with light pressure, cool with a damp cloth, and smooth imperfections with fine-grit sandpaper as needed.

Proper maintenance ensures your Alpha Hard Shell Tent maintains peak performance and a professional finish for years to come.
