Rear Hatch & Tailgate Clearance
Rear Hatch & Tailgate Clearance
Rear hatch or tailgate clearance depends on the relationship between the vehicle’s usable roof length and the tent’s closed length.
If the tent closely matches or exceeds the usable roof length, rear hatch or tailgate clearance may be limited, and full opening may not be possible.
Common solutions include:
Depending on the vehicle and mounting position, the following solutions may help improve clearance:
- Repositioning the tent forward on the roof rack
- Using a full-length platform rack
- Adding rack risers or spacers
- Upgrading rear hatch lift struts
- Using a bed-mounted or external support system (exoskeleton rack), where applicable
Load Capacity & Support Systems
Load Capacity & Support Systems
If your vehicle roof or roof rack does not meet the required dynamic load capacity, an external support system (such as an exoskeleton rack) may be required to safely carry the tent.

Overview
The Tuff Stuff® Ranger 65-Inch is a soft shell rooftop tent designed for campers who want more interior space without sacrificing reliability or simplicity. With an additional 10 inches added to the original Ranger footprint, this upgraded model delivers noticeably more room for couples, small families, or anyone who values extra sleeping space.
The interior sleeping area is large enough to comfortably accommodate 2–3 people, including up to three full-sized adults. A thick foam mattress comes pre-installed, and all bedding can remain stored inside the tent when closed, freeing up valuable cargo space inside your vehicle.

Installation
The Ranger 65 Rooftop Tent is designed for straightforward installation and universal mounting compatibility. Setup typically takes 1–2 hours with two people. A detailed instruction manual and all required mounting hardware are included.
Installation Steps
- All necessary tools, mounting hardware, and stakes are included for installation on most standard roof rack systems.
- The annex room attaches easily via zipper after the rooftop tent has been fully mounted.
- Recommended mounting height: 76″–78″ from the ground to ensure proper ladder extension and correct annex fitment.
- Mounting brackets slide within the lower mounting rail, accommodating crossbars spaced up to 52″ apart.
- Recommended crossbar spacing: 45″ or less for optimal support.
- Included brackets support crossbars up to 3.25″ wide. Wider crossbars may require custom-fabricated brackets.
Installation Notes
- Your vehicle must be equipped with crossbars rated for at least 150 lbs, spaced a minimum of 32.5″ apart.
- Pickup trucks: A bed rack system is recommended rather than mounting directly to the cab roof.
- If fabricating custom mounting rails, wait until the tent arrives to confirm exact measurements.
Will this tent fit my vehicle?
Yes. Roof-top tents are universal and not vehicle-specific.
What matters most is your roof rack system — make sure it can support both the weight of the tent and the occupants inside.
Your crossbars should be no wider than 3.25” for the included brackets to fit correctly.
If your crossbars exceed that width, you’ll need custom brackets or adapters.
Always check your vehicle manual for roof-load capacity before installation.
Can I run my vehicle and tent through a car wash?
Only if you’re filming an epic fail for social media.
Otherwise, no — it will destroy your tent faster than a category-5 hurricane.
What is the tent made from?
Constructed from high-quality poly-cotton ripstop fabric, engineered for durability, waterproofing, and wind resistance.
Why did everything get wet inside if the tent is waterproof?
Condensation, not leaks.
When warm air inside meets cold air outside, moisture forms on walls and poles.
We recommend adding an anti-condensation mat to reduce this effect and improve airflow.
Keep the vents open — moisture hates ventilation.
Can I wash the mattress cover?
Yes, the mattress cover is fully removable and washable.
Why don’t you use memory-foam mattresses?
Because memory foam and cold weather don’t mix.
When it’s cold, memory foam hardens and traps moisture — leading to mildew.
Our included high-density foam mattress stays warm, dry, and comfortable in all conditions.
Can the tent open from either side of my vehicle?
Yes. You can choose to open it from the right or left side depending on your vehicle setup.
Is all installation hardware included?
Absolutely. Every tent comes with mounting brackets, tools, and hardware.
Just make sure your roof rack or bed rack is installed and rated to handle the weight.
How many people can this tent sleep?
Comfortably 2–3 adults, or two adults with one child.
For extra sleeping space, add the optional annex room.
Is the tent easy to open and close?
Yes — once you’ve practiced a few times.
Setup takes around 10–15 minutes, most of which is inserting the window rods for ventilation.
Can it handle strong wind and heavy rain?
Absolutely.
The Ranger 65 comes with a durable rainfly and has been tested in high winds and storms.
When secured correctly, it’s built to keep you safe and dry.
Do I need to clean the tent after every trip?
Not necessarily — the driving cover keeps it protected during travel.
But we recommend opening it up occasionally to air it out and brush off debris before storage.
Do I need to air it out after camping?
Yes — always.
Moisture from body heat, breath, or even spills can cause mildew if left closed.
Air it out after every trip to keep your tent fresh and ready for the next adventure.
