Overview

The Tuff Stuff Alpha II is a hard-shell, side-opening rooftop tent designed for campers who want quick setup, a compact footprint, and dependable four-season performance.

As one of Tuff Stuff’s most popular rooftop tent designs, the Alpha II sets up in under two minutes, making it ideal for overnight stops, weekend trips, and frequent travel. Its sloped ABS shell helps reduce wind resistance while driving, and the higher closed profile allows bedding to remain inside when packed—saving time at camp.

Built with durable materials, a comfortable mattress, and multiple ventilation points, the Alpha II delivers a practical balance of comfort, speed, and reliability.

Why Campers Choose the Alpha II

  • Fast Side-Opening Design
The Alpha II opens to the passenger side only, creating a wide sleeping area with simple, efficient deployment.
  • Aerodynamic Hard Shell
The ABS shell is shaped to help minimize wind resistance while protecting the tent during travel.
  • Bedding Stays Inside
The taller closed height allows sleeping bags and light bedding to remain inside when the tent is closed.
  • Four-Season Construction
Designed with weather-resistant fabrics, a rainfly, and a rigid shell to handle changing conditions throughout the year.

Installation Notes

  • Your vehicle must have crossbars (left to right) that can support at least 190 lbs of dynamic weight.

  • Crossbars should be a minimum of 30 inches apart for proper weight distribution and safety.

  • For pickup trucks, we strongly recommend using a truck bed rack. Alpha tents should not be mounted directly on the cab roof.

  • Rooftop tents are not vehicle-specific — ensure your vehicle’s roof rack or rail system is rated to handle both the tent’s weight and the occupants inside.

  • Always confirm crossbar dimensions: maximum width is 3.25 inches to fit the included mounting brackets. Wider bars will require custom brackets or adapters.

Mounting the Tent

  1. Mounting requires at least two people to safely lift and position the tent.

  2. The tent is designed to open on the passenger side. Position the tent on your roof rack, bed rack, or trailer, and center it for balance.

  3. Using the supplied hardware and mounting plates, slide the bolts into the tent’s underside mounting channels — two bolts per corner, one in front and one behind each crossbar.

  4. Insert bolts through the bracket holes and thread the nuts onto each bolt.

  5. Adjust the tent’s alignment and appearance. Once balanced, tighten the nuts firmly until the tent is secure.

  6. Release the side buckles, lift the handle to activate the hydraulic arms, and open the hard shell.

  7. Extend the telescoping ladder fully, then pull down to unfold the tent completely.

  8. Adjust the ladder height and angle for stability.

  9. Insert the tension rods into the window and overhang sleeves to create support for the awnings.

  10. Open the door, secure the ladder, and enjoy your rooftop setup.

Required Maintenance

Clear Coat Protection
The Alpha shell includes a UV-protected clear coat over the ABS surface to guard against sunlight, salt, and debris. Over time, this layer may wear down or chip. Regular cleaning and waxing will extend its life.

Tips for Clear Coat Care:

  • Avoid direct sunlight exposure whenever possible.
Long UV exposure can fade or weaken the protective coat. Park in shaded areas or indoors when not in use.

  • Remove bird droppings or bug residue immediately.
These are acidic and can damage the surface if left untreated. Rinse gently with clean water.

  • Wash off salt buildup regularly.
For coastal or winter conditions, rinse your tent frequently to prevent corrosion and dulling.

  • Avoid tree sap.
Sap can stain or soften the coating. Clean gently with mild soap and water.

  • Hand wash and wax periodically.
Use a microfiber cloth and non-abrasive automotive wax. This seals pores and keeps the surface glossy and smooth.

Shell Repair – When Damage Occurs

Repair Process:

  1. Clean the damaged area with mild soap, water, and a plastic-safe cleaner.

  2. Sand or grind the affected spot to remove loose debris or edges.

  3. Use a rigid plastic repair compound to fill cracks or chips (compatible with ABS materials).

  4. Allow to cure, then prime and paint as desired.

Alignment & Surface Correction:

  • If the shell is warped, gently heat the area with a heat gun until pliable, then reshape using a small roller or blunt tool.

  • Once shaped correctly, cool the surface with a damp cloth.

  • Sand smooth using fine (80-grit) sandpaper to level out imperfections before refinishing.

  • For edge tears, align the outer surface with aluminum body tape before repairing from the inside — this reduces filler use and restores factory shape.

Recommended Products

  • Use ABS-safe plastic repair kits or epoxy-based fillers for lasting durability.

  • Avoid welding unless performed by a professional with experience in ABS and composite
