Rear Hatch & Tailgate Clearance
Rear Hatch & Tailgate Clearance
Rear hatch or tailgate clearance depends on the relationship between the vehicle’s usable roof length and the tent’s closed length.
If the tent closely matches or exceeds the usable roof length, rear hatch or tailgate clearance may be limited, and full opening may not be possible.
Common solutions include:
Depending on the vehicle and mounting position, the following solutions may help improve clearance:
- Repositioning the tent forward on the roof rack
- Using a full-length platform rack
- Adding rack risers or spacers
- Upgrading rear hatch lift struts
- Using a bed-mounted or external support system (exoskeleton rack), where applicable
Load Capacity & Support Systems
Load Capacity & Support Systems
If your vehicle roof or roof rack does not meet the required dynamic load capacity, an external support system (such as an exoskeleton rack) may be required to safely carry the tent.

The primary difference between the Tuff Stuff Alpine 61 and the Tuff Stuff Alpine 51 is size.
Video shown is the Tuff Stuff Alpine 61. The Alpine 51 shares the same design and features, with the primary difference being overall size.
Overview
Tuff Stuff Alpine 51 is a compact aluminum rooftop tent built for campers who want fast deployment, flexible airflow, and true four-season durability in a narrower footprint.
Dual-action opening system allows two setup configurations:

With four gas struts, one person can deploy the Alpine 51 in approximately one minute, making it ideal for quick overnights and efficient pack-down.
Constructed with a full aluminum shell, blackout-coated fabric, and a reinforced honeycomb floor, this tent is designed to handle rain, wind, snow, and extended outdoor use.

Installation & Setup Guide
Mounting your tent requires a minimum of two people. Due to the solid construction of the Alpine 51, three people are recommended for safer handling and easier positioning.
-
Place the tent on top of your vehicle roof rack, bed rack, or trailer, positioning it evenly based on your preferred setup.
- For vehicles with rear hatches, confirm there is enough clearance to fully open the trunk or tailgate.
-
Using the supplied mounting hardware and plates, slide the bolts into the tent’s integrated T-slot mounting rail.
- Use two bolts per corner — one in front of and one behind each crossbar.
-
Feed the bolts through the mounting bracket holes and thread the provided nuts onto each bolt.
-
Check the tent’s alignment, vehicle balance, and overall appearance. Once satisfied, tighten all nuts evenly until the tent is fully secured and cannot shift.
Setting Up in Wedge Mode
-
Locate the two rear latches at the back of the tent.
-
Pull each red latch upward to release tension, then unhook it from the clasp.
-
Push upward on the handles. The tent will automatically rise into wedge mode using the built-in gas struts.
-
Tuck the elastic cinch strap upward into the T-slot for storage.
-
Attach the telescoping ladder at your preferred entry point and adjust it for proper height and angle.
-
Unzip the screen and fabric panels, roll them up, and secure them using the provided clips.
-
Deploy the window awnings and shoe bags using the included rods and mounting points.
Once complete, the Alpine 51 is ready for use in its wedge configuration — ideal for quick stops and overnight camping.
Converting to Full Pop-Up Mode
-
From wedge mode, locate the two front latches and unlatch them from the tent frame.
-
Push upward on the handles. The tent will smoothly expand into full pop-up mode, providing maximum interior height and airflow.
-
Pull the elastic cinch strap downward into the T-slot for secure storage.
-
Unzip all window covers to expose the mesh panels for full ventilation.
-
For privacy or light blocking, simply zip the fabric panels closed.
-
With all windows and doors closed, the blackout-coated fabric creates a fully dark interior — perfect for uninterrupted sleep in any environment.
Important Notes
- Recheck all mounting bolts and brackets after your first trip and periodically thereafter.
- Ensure your roof rack or bed rack supports at least 190 lbs dynamic load and 600+ lbs static load.
- This tent is designed to open on the passenger side only for safer and more convenient access.
